Brynn picked himself up off the floor. He was still inside the captured Zariat ship, and he was unharmed. Nola straightened up next to him. Golia was still standing. A wall of rock blocked the pilot’s window.

“What happened?” he asked.

Just then, a knocking sound thumped through the hull. Brynn glanced at the pilot’s station, but the whole console was utterly dead. Not one trace of power remained. Another knock made him look toward the hatch. What was he supposed to do—tap out a message in Morse code?

Brynn advanced on the hatch to look for some emergency release, but the word emergency didn’t jive with his new idea of the Zariat. He could be trapped in here for years before he found a way out.

He had just run his hand over the hatch’s inner rim when a devastating rip tore the whole hatch off. Brynn, Nola, and Golia stared through the opening at a sea of people crowding around the ship.

Admiral Clayton, Christy Buller, and several other Engel officers stood with an absolutely mind-blowing horde of miners, all dressed in their protective armor. Brynn couldn’t recognize any of them with their hoods up. The torn-off hatch lay discarded on the floor, with a hooked chain attached to it.

Christy extended her hand into the flight compartment. “That was some platinum flying, Corporal.”

Nola shuffled her feet. “Uh…thank you, ma’am.”

“Come on down, you three,” Admiral Clayton boomed. “Come and see what you just did.”

Nola glanced at Brynn. “What did we do? We were running away.”

“Sorry about that,” Admiral Clayton replied. “It took us a little too long to figure out why one Zariat ship would be trying to get away instead of helping destroy us.”

He held out his hand to Nola and helped her down. Brynn hopped to the floor, and the sea of miners parted to let the friends through. Admiral Clayton and Christy escorted the trio to a huge cavern carved into the mountain.

The three Disasters rested on their landing gear not far away. Engel personnel worked on them, side by side with hooded miners who appeared to know exactly what they were doing.

The crowd swirled around Brynn, and faces regarded him through their tinted visors. He couldn’t see their eyes or their features. They looked like giant insects with armored human bodies. In a way, they reminded him of the Chechog.

They steered the friends past the Disasters. When the bodies parted, he found himself approaching a railing. From here, he looked down into a broad swirling mass of humanity on a lower floor. Zariat craft of different sizes dotted the floor, with miners strolling around the ships.

Admiral Clayton led the way to a flight of stairs descending to the floor. The crowd swept Brynn toward one of the Zariat craft. He wasn’t sure what he would find when he got there, but when they approached, he spotted a cluster of Zariat personnel huddled in the corner.

Dozens of armed miners guarded them, with loaded rifles at the ready. Of all the miners packing this underground world, two stood nearby with their hoods off.
